April 1 2009

so here she goes...

traveled to charlotte, nc this past weekend to participate in my first tri of the season. i was pretty amped and ready to get this thing going.
i arrived at the race with plenty of time to get warmed up...went for a 5 minute bike ride...jumped in the pool and swam 350 yards...
got out and had to sit for awhile. for some reason, i was a little too amped! i began getting light-headed and queezy.
i think this being my first race as a "sponsored" athlete made me a little over anxious. anyways...i took a few deep breaths and
relaxed and was ready to go. there were about 12 or so pro's racing (this is a popular race in the area...to get the season started)...
so i had the opportunity to sit and watch the pro's get going. the race was a pool start, so time trial start...so i wasn't scheduled to go
until 8:27am (race started at 8:00am).
i waited outside until about 8:24am and rushed inside to get going...i don't like standing around all those other folks flippin' out/stressin...
so i like to wait until the last minute. i went inside, jumped in the "warm up" lane and was ready to go in about a minute.
swim- i quickly got into a rhythm and was feeling strong. my breathing was under control and began passing people around the
150 yard mark. every other 50, i could hear friends yelling at me when i pushed off the wall...which was very encouraging.
i noticed around 300 yards i was humming at tune to a song...which i tend to do when i get really relaxed. at this point,
i just continued to take long smooth strokes (as my dynamo coach always reminds me) and finished strong. i ended up passing about
6 swimmers.
t1- was quick and painless...my shoes are already clipped in (lesson learned from florida)..so off to the bike!
bike- windy windy windy. it was windy as heck on sunday morning in charlotte, nc. the bike started on a long hill (ascent). i had driven the course
the day before to get an idea of the hill length. i knew to go strong, but not all out. the roads were alittle wet and i saw a few bikers on the
side of the road either with maintenance problems, or body injury from falling...sucks. the ride is what it is...so i finished feeling like i could
have gone harder...but glad i didn't due to the road conditions. my goal for the bike is to not get passed by anyone...which i didn't.
t2- quick and easy again.
run- now this is where most of my focus was for this race. i had been working through the off-season to run a sub 21 minute 5k. i started out
of t2 strong...again...uphill out of t2 for about 4 minutes...sucked! i continued to push strong though knowing that there really is no
"down hill" or
areas to make up time on a run course. i actually felt like i wasn't running as hard as i should have been. i caught my shadow on the ground and
few times and thought that i "LOOKED" like i was moving fine...so i stayed postivie and kept pushing. it seemed like the course was 4miles long!
i thought it would never end...guess that meant i was in a fair amount of discomfort...which is good!
anyways...good race. won my division by >8minutes (which is odd...a person usually wins by seconds or a minute or two)...so happy with my
training.
results
swim- 500 yards, 7:19seconds
t1- 00:53seconds
bike- 20k, 33:48seconds
t2- 00:48seconds
